Emptiness of Gluttony
July 25, 2021
“For my people have committed two evils: (1) They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and (2) hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” – Jeremiah 2:19
UNDERSTANDING THE SIN OF GLUTTONY
- What gluttony is not – simply overeating and getting fat
- God’s Purpose for Food:
- God created food and called it good. Food is not the problem when we consider the sin of gluttony (Genesis 1:29-30).
- God created food not only as fuel for our bodies but also for the joy of our heart (Psalm 104:14-15).
- God intended food to be shared around the table of fellowship (Acts 2:24, Revelation 9:7, Isaiah 25:6-8)
- Gluttony Defined: Gluttony make food central and seeks to satisfy the longing in our heart with food, absent of God.
GLUTTONY’S MENU
- Eating Excessively – demanding too much food
- Eating Impulsively – demanding food right now
- Eating Sumptuously – Demanding only the best food
- Eating Daintily – Demanding only the most perfectly prepared food.
EATING TO THE GLORY OF GOD
- “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” 1 Corinthians 10:31).
- Eat with true thanks to God
- Eat with self-control
- Eat around the table of fellowship
- PRACTICES TO CULTIVATE OUR HEARTS
- Fasting – intentionally denying our physical body to cultivate our spiritual hunger for God
- Hospitality – takes the focus off the food and seeks to serve others – their preferences, and their joy being shared together.
