Jeremiah 9:23-24; 1 Cor. 1:30-31
SEVEN DEADLY SINS
- First created in the mid-4th century by Evagrius of Pontus while pastoring and teaching for 17 years in a monastic community.
- These categories came to western christianity in the 5th century.
- Throughout the centuries, these categories of sin served “as a rubric for self-examination and an aid for confession, earnest Christians could trace the species (kind) of sin to their source and excise it through repentance and application of the gospel.” Marshall Segal
- The Catholic Church unhelpfully added degrees to the categories thus adding the adjective of “deadly” to the list of sins.
